I warmly welcome you to the Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies (IPSS), University of Ibadan, Nigeria. The Senate of the University established the Institute in 2015 to harmonise some existing peace and security-related programmes located in different Faculties, Institutes and Departments of the University. The oldest of these programmes is as old as 1996. Hence, graduates from the various academic and professional programmes of the Institute are today spread across the globe managing diverse academic and policy-related programmes and projects in the field of peace and security. Besides, they are strong pillars making outstanding contributions towards a peaceful and united Nigeria today.

At IPSS, our main goal is to bridge the existing gap between theory and practice of security studies and peace building at the national, continental and global levels. To this extent, our classroom activities are supplemented with invited lecturers and simulation exercises delivered by seasoned conflict, security and disaster risk management practitioners across the globe. On regular basis, our students are also taken outside the University for different forms of capacity building contacts with practitioners in the fields. For strengthening this aspect of our work, IPSS has established organic working relationship with the West African Network for Peacebuilding (Accra, Ghana), the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators, the Nigerian Army Resource Centre (Abuja, Nigeria), Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP), the National Defence College (Abuja, Nigeria) as well as the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

It is interesting to also observe that faculty members of the Institute combine the knowledge of disaster mitigation, security studies, peace scholarship and practice and are therefore highly skilled for making outstanding contributions to the attainment of the peace and security objectives of the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU), and the Economic Community of the West African States (ECOWAS) in Africa. In the years to come, the Institute seeks to rank among the world best in the fields of security studies, peace education and disaster risk management by improving on the number of its academic programmes, building the capacity of its faculties, and acquiring better tools for teaching, doing research and rendering community services.

You are hereby welcome to the official page of the Institute, we welcome your comments.

Thank you.
